Additional description The motif depicts the statue of Hibernia standing on the General Post Office building, whose occupation in 1916 marked the beginning of the Easter Rising. Hibernia is a symbol of Ireland. Her name comes from the ancient Greek term for Ireland, and her likeness was created by sculptor John Smyth. She is considered a witness to the events of 1916 and has been observing the nation's growth based on the ideals set out in the declaration of independence for a hundred years. She continues to look forward and is a symbol of the country's past, present, and future. At the top of the inner circle is the handwritten inscription "HIBERNIA" inspired by the manuscript of the historical Book of Kells. Sun rays reflect the fundamental concept of the uprising and the declaration of independence, in other words, the dawn of a new state/republic. The depiction of the statue is accompanied by the year "1916" on the left and the year "2016" on the right. At the bottom of the inner circle is the name of the issuing country "éire" and below it is the year of issue "2016". In the outer ring of the coin, twelve stars of the European Union flag are depicted.
